Bocce in Little Italy is played in D’Alesandro Park at 902 Stiles Street, named after the late Thomas D’Alesandro, Jr. a three-term mayor of Baltimore (1947-1959) and resident of the neighborhood. His son Thomas D’Alesandro III, also served as mayor of Baltimore for one term beginning 1967.

LEAGUE GUIDELINES

  • League's team capacity is 16; up to 8 players on a team (4 primary, 4 subs)

  • 6 p.m. start time

  • Games approximately every 45 minutes

  • Divisions: Sicilia Division and Sardegna Division (all teams compete)

  • League is competitive yet casual; focus is fun!

  • End of season division playoff and league championship (double elimination; all teams have opportunity to win championship)

  • Cash prizes and trophies for winner

  • League donates portion of team fees to St. Leo’s parish

  • All ages, genders and nationalities welcome

  • Must be 14 years or older to play

  • Each team supplies shirts (uniform not mandatory; team sponsors welcome)

LEAGUE GUIDELINES

  • League carries 12 teams of 8 players (4 players per game)

  • Must be age 16 years or older to play (male/female)

  • League split into two divisions with all teams competing

  • Season runs May through September with weekly start times of 6:45, 7:30 and 8:15

  • Games take 30-45 minutes each

  • Tournament held at season-end using double elimination

  • Cash prizes and trophies for winners

  • Many Italians participate, however, all are welcome

  • This league is competitive

  • Each team supplies shirts (uniform not mandatory; you are welcome to get sponsors)

RULES OF PLAY for BOCCE
  • Two members of each team play at opposite ends of the field.
  • Each player must throw two balls when play is on their side.
  • The pallino must stop between the center line and the line closest to the far baseboard.
  • Throw lines - first line: lagline, ball thrown ... second line: spada, ball thrown fast ... third line: airborne ball, ball must travel past the center line in the air.
  • Players must not follow the bocce down the field after the toss; stay within designated toss area. One warning only.
  • After one warning per game for any rule violation, a team will forfeit the game at the referee's discretion.
  • After the referee calls a point, a team will have one minute to throw the next boccia or their ball will be declared dead.
  • Coaching is not permitted by players standing in the field near the far baseboard. One warning only.
  • Banking is allowed.
  • Bocce hitting the far baseboard without hitting another boccia or which does not travel halfway onto the field, are considered dead and will be removed.
  • The referee is responsible for all measurements determining points awarded and making the points.
  • The referee has the authority to disqualify any team that ignores the rules.
  • The referee's word is final.
  • When a team is called to play, they have 10 minutes to enter the court or the game is forfeited.
